This is powerful iconography. At the time, proportionally few people in England could read. Those that could either belonged to a church, monastery etc or received their education from them. For everyone else in the congregation, moral and spiritual teaching took the form of sermons, reinforced on a more lasting basis by wall paintings and stone carvings in the church. On this tomb, then, we have the very comforting presence of angels or nuns reading prayers for the soul of the departed lady. (Photo Apr 2015).
