Manufacturer's mansion, 1860, for James Barlow. Coursed sandstone
rubble with quoins, 2-span slate roof with cross-gables, various
chimneys. Rectangular plan, roughly 4x3 bays. Two and 2½ storeys,
in free Gothic style, with steeply-pitched roofs and gables, some
pointed arched doors and windows. Principal feature of the
asymmetrical left side is a large 2-storey porch which rises above
the eaves, has bands on 2 levels, sloped diagonal buttresses to the
ground floor dying into chamfered corners at 1st floor, a triangular-
headed moulded doorway offset to the right, a pointed light above the
band to the left, a 1st floor window of 5 pointed lights, a parapet
and a hipped monopitched roof running up into the gable of the
stairwell. To the left of this the main features are a tall gabled
dormer breaking the eaves, and beyond this a gabled crosswing with an
oriel window at 1st floor and attic window of 2 pointed lights. To
the right is a tall extruded chimney stack. Garden front (right return
wall) has 2 gables with large 1st floor windows, between them at
1st floor a small window of 3 pointed lights, to the right at ground
floor a canted bay window, and the rest of the ground floor is covered by
a large rectangular conservatory with glazed walls and hipped glazed roof
protected by a balustrade. Interior is little altered.
