High Mill and attached Mill House
II
Water mill and attached house. Early C19. Dressed stone, with pantile roof, with a
red brick stack, and a stone gable stack plus stone coped gables. 3 storey mill
building, with slightly later mill house to north west. South west front of mill
has a doorway with plank door to left, and a single 2 light window to right, above
2 similar windows, and above again 2 smaller single light windows. To the left the
mill house has a central glazed C20 door, flanked by 2 light casements, above
2 similar casements. North east front, mill building built into hillside only
2 storey with central boarded doorway, and above 2 small shuttered openings. Mill
house to right has central doorway with to the left a 3 light casement, and to the
right a small fixed light and beyond a 2 light casement, above a 3 and a 2 light
casement. All openings have large flush stone lintels. To the south east gable
front an attached single storey addition, possibly a stable, with a plank stable
door and a window, above a single window to each floor.
Interior. Mill has wheel house and wheel pit at south east end, wheel shaft
survives, but the wheel has been replaced by a small iron wheel. Cast iron hurst
gears and wooden shafting through 3 floors. There is a reputedly unique hurst drive
on the top floor, which consists of wooden pegs driven into wooden discs forming a
primitive bevel gear.
A mill was first recorded on this site in 1276.
