II
Former forge, now converted to offices. Early/mid C19, converted circa 1980.
Coursed blocks of sandstone ashlar, some brick at rear end; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Low building on a rough east west axis, its west end gable-end onto The
Green, it faces south towards Forge House. It now has a 3-room plan. It is
not known whether any of the internal crosswalls date from the C19.
Single storey.
Exterior: Irregular front has 3 windows and 3 doorways. All occupy original
openings except that the right end window is blocking another original
doorway. Windows and part-glazed doors are all C20. Roof is gable-ended and
includes a couple of C20 skylights. Front (west) gable is stone ashlar with
shaped kneelers and coping and it contains a ventilator slit with chamfered
surround.
Interior: Plain carpentry detail.
This former forge is a well-built stone building which forms part of an
attractive and varied group of building along the east side of The Green.
