nos 142 and 143

GV II

Pair of cottages, c1840, perhaps designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active
at Helmingham Hall (qv) in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with moulded brick
stack to party wall. Pantile roof with vergeboards to gables and pair of half
dormers; swept eaves. Single storey with outshut to rear. Entrances to outer
ranges with four-centred arches; doors of an original design. Casements of
original design to no. 143. Picturesque style combining vernacular forms with
those of the 'cottage orne' tradition. Cottages 135-143 and the Church form
a group.
