5/93 The Cross Keys Public

GV II
Public house. Late C16 or early C17, extended later C17, refronted and
extended mid C19. Timber frame, red brick casing and additions. Steeply
pitched black glazed and red pantiled roofs. A 3 cell plan with an early bay
added to rear, later extended to right or service end. 2 storeys and attic.
Recessed vertically panelled doors in lobby and cross entrance positions,
architraves with hoodmoulds; transomed 3-light C19 part opening glazing bar
casements, heavily moulded surrounds with hoodmoulds. Plinth, boxed eaves.
Axial ridge stack between hall and parlour to left of centre with an
oversailing cap, at original right end a cross axial stack with 3 C19
diagonally set shafts with oversailing caps. Right gable end transomed 2-
light casements with hoodmoulds, pierced wavy bargeboards. Left gable end is
plastered with a 2-light attic casement with hoodmould, similar bargeboards,
attached to left a 1 storey C19 outbuilding. To rear centre is an early 1
bay, 1 storey and attic gabled addition, plastered with an architraved 16 pane
sash and 2-light glazing bar casement, exposed plates and purlins; right
return has a rebuilt stack in a later lean-to. Behind parlour end a C20 lean-
to, behind plastered service end a brick lean-to with a 6 panelled door.
Interior: frame concealed, jowled storey posts, stop chamfered axial binding
beam in 'hall', in rear bay an indented stop chamfered binding beam on moulded
posts and an early C19 lugged fireplace surround. First floor not inspected.
