Palace forecourt gate piers with lamps, gates, railings. 1901-1911 by Sir Aston
Webb as part of his Victoria Memorial scheme together with the gates,
balustrades etc at the west end of the Mall, q.v. Portland stone and ornate
ironwork. Beaux Arts inspired Imperial classicism. Tall panelled gate piers
with carved trophies and ornamented, surmounted by sculptural groups and
heraldic beasts, the main piers with candelabra lanterns and single lanterns to
the piers spacing the railings; the ornamental gates of wrought iron and bronze
by W Gilbert and L Weingarten of the Bromsgrove Guild. The gate piers are in fact
those designed by Blore in 1847-50, re-used, copied and elaborated by Webb.
