GV II
Gate piers. C19. Local rubble and ashlar stone. Square rubble piers about 600mm wide and 1.5 metres tall, with cornice caps, and then step blocks with arched decoration with cylindrical panelled and crenellated top in the form of a chimney pot or a rook chess-piece.
Probably erected by Thomas Moody, c1851, when he put in new boundary walls and formed a new access to Ireson House (qv), and complementary to its setting. (Sweetman G, History of Wincanton, c1904).
