Entrance lodge. Circa 1853-4 with minor later additions and alterations.
Red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, corner panels and moulded
plinth; machine tile roofs with ornamental cresting and elaborately
decorated cusped bargeboards with pointed finials and pendants. T-plan
with long range to rear and 2-storey porch to front forming cruciform
shape; in a Victorian Tudor style. 2 storeys and attic. Entrance
side: 3-light cusped stone mullion windows with moulded dripstones
and similar 2-light windows to first floor to left and right of central
2-storey porch; small cusped windows immediately below eaves have gables
above. Porch has 4-centred outer arch with one order of shafts and
quatrefoil decoration to spandrels; half-glazed door with Gothic tracery
decoration. Crenellated oriel window above. Similar oriel windows
to first floor of gable ends with plain shield decoration to cills.
Prominent central red brick ridge stack has 4 attached octagonal stone
shafts with moulded capping and blind Gothic tracery to bases. Rear
range has similar windows to front and central ridge stack with 2 octagonal
shafts. The lodge was built when a drive linking Weston with Hawkstone
Hall (q.v. under Hodnet C.P.) was made in 1853-4.
