Description

TQ 3081 NE and 3181 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER STRAND, WC2
60/8; 61/14
Screen walls, gates,
5.2.70 railings and lamps to
the Law Courts
G.V. I
Screen walls, gates, railings and lamps enclosing the Law Courts complex.
c. 1874, designed by G.E. Street. Portland stone and wrought and cast iron.
C13 Gothic style with inventive use of detail typical of Street's attention
to craftmanship. Sections of arcaded and gabled screen walls and gateways
setting off and tying in the projections and recessions of the building behind
them, linked by highly decorative Gothic ironwork, freely treated as railings
running between lofty piers on the eastern and northern boundaries - of a
quality only rivalled in the genre by Pugin; an essential component of the
overall design.
