Offices. 1909-11 by Sir John Burnet. Portland stone ashlar cladding steel
frame, slate roof. Subtle restrained handling of classical motifs
incorporating figure sculpture; part of the Aldwych-Kingsway development.
6 storeys plus attic storey and dormered mansard. 7 windows wide, with
front curved convexly following line of Aldwych. Ground floor has central
entrance framed by coupled Doric columns as are flanking windows, the dark
bronze detailing of window and door frames increasing the effect of depth
and shadow in ground floor provided by the colonnade. Simplified classical
detailing to surrounds of bronze casement windows on upper floors. Sharply
profiled main entablature below set back attic storey. Pairs of high
relief carved figures are disposed in triangular composition on upper
floors.
