A Cl8 brick house with extensive later C18, mid Cl9 and late C19 extensions on
the north and south ends. All the variously dated extensions are built in a similar
style, The main block is of red and blue brick with a parapet, a dentilled cornice
between the lst and 2nd storeys and a raised band between the ground and 1st storeys.
5 window range, double-hung sashes with glazing bars, in flush cased frames, with
segmental heads. The doorway has a 6-panel door with a semi-circular fanlight
with fan glazing bars and a Tuscan doorcase with plain columns and a modillion
pediment. The roof of the main block is tiled, hipped at the north and south
ends. On the north of the main block is a small 2 storeyed wing of 1 window range
with a parapet and a Dutch gable on the west and east fronts, On the west front
the gable has a circular panel with the initials S C C above the date 1798. It
is said to have been built by Samuel Charles Carne as an officers mess in the
napoleonic Wars. On the lst storey there is a 5-light lunette and on the ground
storey a Venetian window set in an arched recess. The dentilled cornice and raised
brick band which run between the storeys of the main block are darned across
the wings to the north and south. To the south of the main block is a 2 storeyed
wing of similar design to that on the north but with the Initials F C R above
the date 1868 in the Dutch gable on the west front. A late C19 block was added
to the south of this, with a small wing of 1 window range on each fade projecting
on the west front at the north end and a block of 4 window range with a 3-light
semi-circular headed window under a Dutch gable at the south end, with the initials
K A R above the date 1893. Roofs tiled.
