House with shop. Late medieval; remodelled and extended in C17; mid/late C19
alterations. Render over timber frame, with rendered late C19 brick shop front
to left; old plain tile roof to cross wing on left, gabled at front and half-
hipped at rear; mid/late C19 Welsh slate roof to range on right; mid C19 brick
ridge stack, and similar end stack to rear of cross wing. Plan: C15 house
formed of cross wing to left of open hall; stack and floor to hall inserted in
late C16/early C17; the hall range was remodelled as part of a C19 terrace in
the mid/late C19. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Flat rendered arches over mid C20
two-light windows; late C19 shop front, to gable end of cross wing on left, has
horned plate-glass sash and half-glazed door; C20 door to range on right. Two
late C19 horned 6-pane sashes to left side wall of cross wing. C17 one-storey
extension, rendered with gabled plain tile roof, to rear of cross wing. Interior:
cross wing has exposed timber framing and 2-bay common-rafter roof supported by
crown post, with usual longitudinal braces and curved down braces which stands
on arched-braced tie beam and jowled wall posts. The rear of the cross wing has
been truncated, probably in the C17. The former (late medieval) open hall
retains its wall plates and jowled wall posts, with smoke-blackened crown-post roof
to rear. It is probable that the open-hall range was built earlier than the
cross wing.
