27/297 Blaeberry Cleugh
lead-mine buddle,
on west bank of
Blaeberry Cleugh
GV II
Buddle. Probably second half of C18. Roughly coursed sandstone rubble, using
long stones in dry construction. Walls about 40 cm. high form enclosure about
one by 5 metres; opening at south end from which water drained after washing
lead ore. With the knocking wall and bingstead to the south, a complete and
rare example of primitive ore-dressing techniques.

Historical note: Westernhope mines were worked for the Blackett family from
early C18 to 1861. ( Information from Ian Forbes, Durham County Council).
