Knocking wall and bingstead. Probably second half C18. Roughly coursed and
squared rubble in dry construction with some flat coping. Knocking wall at
north: wide stones form wall about 80 cm. high with large flat stones on top,
worn at point of impact, on which ore was crushed by hammers; ground behind on
level with top of wall enclosed by low side walls and by slope at rear.
Bingstead one metre to south: U-shaped, open towards front; walls about 120 cm.
high, with front ends stepped back, form enclosure for crushed ore. The
knocking wall is a rare survival of an example of primitive ore-dressing
techniques, one of only 3 known in the North Pennines. Information from Ian

Historical note: Westernhope mines were worked (for the Blackett amily from
early C18 to 1861).
