NEEDHAM MARKET HAWKSMILL STREET
TM 0855
3/61 No.29, (Hawksmill Cottage)
-
- II
House, early C16 with fragmentary C15 rear wing. 2 storeys, 2 windows.
Timber-framed and plastered, the upper floor originally long-wall jettied
towards the street. Concrete tiled roof. C20 small-pane casements and
panelled entrance door. A high-quality 2-cell house which retains the altered
rear bays of a C15 cross-wing. In the hall is a wide original fireplace with
a fine lintel, embattled and rib-moulded, and with unusually well-carved
brattishing; sunk panels of painted brick above. Good close-studwork with
long arch - and tension-bracing. Complete crownpost roof, the open truss
having a square unbraced crownpost. The rear wall has arch-braced principal
posts without intermediate studwork, indicating a possible former aisle on the
site of the present C20 extension. The C15 wing has massive 1st floor joists,
tension-braced studwork and a blocked ovolo-moulded mullioned window intruded
in c.1600.
