Chapel and terrace retaining walls at Stourton Castle
GV
II
Chapel and retaining walls. Early to mid-C19 incorporating some earlier
material. Red brick with stone dressings. The walls support the terrace
around Stourton Castle (q.v.) on the north, south and east sides, and a
causeway which approaches the castle from the north; the chapel is beneath
the south-east angle of the terrace. South-side: stepped buttresses,
projecting parapet band and plain coped parapet. The wall is terminated
to the left by a squat circular pier with conical cap and ball finial.
The Chapel to the right has a central pointed door flanked by a pair of
pointed windows with leaded glass; small loop to the left. Interior:
a wooden door, probably C15/16 reputed to have come from the gate tower to
Stourton Castle (q.v.). Included for group value.
