Large house. Now flats. 1798 for Cuthbert Rippon; 1823 additions dated on
rainwater heads, for his son Cuthbert Rippon, M.P. for Gateshead; 1875
addition (to house collection of stuffed birds and animals). Sandstone ashlar
with plinth; roof not visible. Irregular plan. South elevation: 2-storey,
3-bay main entrance front with adjoining one-storey, 5-bay conservatory link
to 2-storey, 3-bay gabled wing on lower ground level. 11 bays in all.
Entrance front has steps up to porch with Tuscan order in antis and entrance
in curved rear wall. Outer bays have sashes with glazing bars below paired
renewed sashes which are flanked by pilasters. Ground floor windows have
projecting stone sills, with sill bands in outer bays. Band below stepped
parapet. Conservatory windows have segmental heads and glazing bars; right end
wing has central 4-light window with renewed glazing and door inserted and
inserted window at left; 2-light window at right; first floor, continuous with
conservatory, has Perpendicular tracery in 3 windows of 2 lights. Top band
supports stepped parapet. Tall central tower.
Interior: entrance hall behind main front has curved doors to flanking oval
rooms with classical motifs in ceiling cornices, left room has Gothic-style
stone chimney-piece; right room has dentilled dado rail. First-floor gallery
and one room have dentilled cornices; open-well stair has round-topped handrail
on painted brass balustrade with delicate pineapple finials to low curves
between rods.
2-storey flat-roofed C20 rear extension not of interest.
