Farm buildings forming planned farmyard to the north of Penfound Farm. Probably
1880s. Built for Squire Edward Mucklow of Whitstone Head. Squared brought built
to course with red and blue brick dressings, slate roofs with rendered coped
gables, some slate hanging. South-west range consists of barn with loft above.
North-east range consists of two 2-storey and one single-storey buildings:
cartshed with loft above, 2-storey building possibly office, single storey building
possibly calf-house. South-east range consists of a single-storey shippon. The
north-east range consists of 2 single-storey buildings and a central cart entrance.
Projecting north east from the barn into the centre of the yard is a single-storey
dung house with 3 openings under brick arches to each side. The concrete floor of
the yard slopes down to the dunghouse. Window openings throughout have brick
arches and centre pivot 2-pane windows. Doorways also have brick arches and brick
jambs and most of the contemporary timber stable doors are intact. The entrance to
the farmyard is imposing: the buildings flanking the gateway have canted corners on
the north east side, gateposts of square section have pyramidal concrete caps and
contemporary iron gates. The dunghouse has canted corners and roof hipped at the
north-east end. Edward Mucklow of Whitstone Head, Whitstone, died 1906. His
estate improvements included ambitious land drainage schemes and the building and
rebuilding of farmyards as planned farms. He was involved in the scheme to extend
the railway to Bude and was the last Chairman of the Bude Harbour and Canal
Company.
