5/260 Grindstone Circle and
grindstone, in garden to
rear of No. 12
II
Grindstone circle with large heavy grindstone. Possibly C18. Outer rim of
circle formed by vertically bedded stones. Circle of hollowed stones are shaped
like voussoirs. Inner circle of stones rises to centre with a square hole sunk
at junction of a cross. Between the arms of the cross, diagonally set cobbles.
Originally for grinding sand from the sandstone outcrop of nearby Knowl Wood
Delph Quarries whose stone was used in the construction of Rochdale Town Hall.
A rare and complete survival.
