Large terraced 1st rate town houses. 1776-c.1780 by James Adam, as a
speculative development with his brothers and John Elwes on a Portland
Estate lease. Stock brick with channelled stucco ground floors; slate
roofs. Astylar elevations built as part of the same symmetrical block as
Nos. 34 to 52 (even) q.v. 4 storeys (including added attic storey),
No. 56 with dormered mansard, on basements. 3-window wide fronts.
Semicircular arched doorways to right and left; double panelled doors with
columned side lights, cornice-doorheads and fanlights, No. 56 retaining
original delicate radial swag pattern. Recessed sashes, under flat gauged
arches to upper floors. Plat band finishes off ground floor stuccowork.
Moulded stucco band over 1st floor and main entablature over 2nd floor;
attic cornice and blocking course. Continuous early C.19 cast iron
balconies to 1st floor. Cast iron urn finialed area railings. No. 56
retains some good Adam interior features with stone geometrical staircase
with wrought iron balustrade, delicate plasterwork and inlaid marble
chimneypieces, etc.
