THE SQUARE
(north side)
Nos 68-72 (consec)
GV
II
Row of 6 estate workers' cottages, now 4 dwellings and a shop. Early C19 probably by
Peter Atkinson for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. Punch-dressed stone,
stone slate roof. 2 storeys. 12 x 3 bay symmetrical facades. Outer 2 bays
projecting wings with quoined angles and hipped roofs with side entrances.
Doorways in bays 3, 5, 8 and 10 have ashlar composite jambs and lintels with
chamfered surrounds. Windows have monolithic lintels and flush sills some
retaining 16-pane Yorkshire sashes. 1st-floor windows square with 12-pane
Yorkshire sashes. Some have altered glazing. Symmetry much disturbed by added
projecting shop window in bay 9 and blocked window in bay 12. 3 ridge stacks
to main range. Left and right returns have central doorway (lobby-entry against
stack) flanked by windows to each floor all with Yorkshire small-pane sashes.
Hipped roofs with central ridge stacks.
The row complements Nos 73-77 (consec) which are earlier.
