Former estate manager's house, now house. Mid-late C18 by John Carr for
Edwin Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood, with early C19 alterations and extension
to rear. Ashlar facade, hammer-dressed stone to sides and rear, Westmorland
green-slate roof. Double-depth. 2-storey 7-bay symmetrical facade the central
3 bays 3-storey and breaking forward slightly under pediment gable. Plinth.
Doorway with architrave, frieze and casement-moulded cornice flanked by windows
with similar cornices, that to right has lowered sill. Above, central window
opened through as door with cast-iron balcony. All bays have 12-pane sash windows
with smaller 9-pane sashes to 1st floor excepting ground-floor bays 5, 6 and 7
which have lowered sills and C19 two-pane sashes. Attic storey: band, quoins
6-pane sashes in square surrounds, moulded coped pedimented gable. Central
ridge stack, lateral stack to each side of central 3 bays. Outer bays under
hipped roofs with end stack to right and 2 other C19 stacks to rear range not of
special interest.
Interior: largely remodelled in the C19 though original architrave surrounds to
6-panel doors and windows with shutters survive. 1st floor and attic have C18
fireplaces with decorative cast-iron grates.
