(East Side)

15/138 Hauxton Watermill
15.9.75
GV II

Watermill 1862 extended to south, late C19. Grey brick, English
bond, but retaining some red and yellow brick in the lower
courses from an earlier mill on the site with low pitch slate
roof. Plan of single range in six roof bays and spanning the
undershot waterwheel and by-pass sluice at the South end. Three
storeys and handling floor. First floor has segmental arches to
four small recessed fixed light windows, two with central pivot
openings. There is a hoist opening at the centre above the
entry doorway, also flanked by four similar windows. Two
segmental arched chases, one to the by-pass sluice and the other
to the mill wheel. The late C19 extension to the south is also
grey brick with a slate roof. Three storeys. It also has a
central doorway with a hoist opening above flanked by two
windows at each storey. Inside much of the original machinery
is intact, including the wooden waterwheel, underdriven grinding
stones and the great spur wheel, wallower and upright shaft.
The Domesday Book records a mill on the site.
