Pair of houses, formerly an Inn ? the Crown. Late C17 front, cut and
dressed ashlar-quality rubble and high plinth, Cotswold stone roof; 3
chimneys, partly in ashlar. Traditional gabled Cotswold style in contrast
to The Chestnuts adjacent (q.v.). 2 storeys and attic. 3 attic gables.
Hollow chamfer mullion windows in rebated surrounds, 3 - 2 - 3 lights to
attics ; 1:4 :1-light outer 2-storey angled bays with hipped stone slate
roofs; central 4-light window with drip on 1st floor. Central segmental
archway on ground floor now filled with two pointed doorways with panelled
doors and Y-tracery over-lights, narrow imposts. Continuous sting over
ground floor raised over central archway. Two irregular windows to right
of arch (former entrance). Two rear wings and barn-like cross wing
forming courtyard; the rear part of east wing is the Masonic Lodge (q.v.).
The Caernarvon-arch doorway to left of the cross-wing indicates a
mediaeval date as does the 1st floor hall of the rear wing. Interior:
altered and divided; Tudor arch fireplace on 1st floor.
