4/50 Little Manson Barn
II
Barn. C18. Thin coursed sandstone rubble, pantile roof, part corrugated iron.
Rectangular three bay barn with central cart doors on either side. Three tiers
of triangular ventilators in all four walls; west gable wall has a rectangular
loading door in gable and a triangular vent, possibly owl hole at apex. South
side has a blocked square window with timber lintel to right of cart door and a
slit vent to the right of that. Although not a bank barn the ground falls to
the south and the south wall is much higher than the north one. Stub of
possible yard wall although high continues south wall to east and is part of the
original.
Interior has two queen strut trusses halved and pegged at apex and with
carpenter's marks. Through purlin roof with light diagonally set ridge. The
empty mortices for clasped purlins indicate the re-use of the main trusses
probably from a C17 building because the present roof is certainly original to
this building.
A well preserved example of a Herefordshire out barn.
