Coaching inn until c.1837. C15 or C16 altered early C17 and in C18, now
shops and offices. Lower parts ashlar, upper parts timber-framed, centre
freestone. In 3 parts to front, central coachway, long rear extensions.
Left hand part slate roofed, the rest Cotswold stone roofs. 2 storeys and
attics; 3 gables to front. The left hand part (Nos 110 and 112)
roughcast; gable to wide angled bay with a glazing bar sash in attic and 3
on 1st floor, pent roof over projecting ground floor in ashlar with C20
openings apart from the 3-light mullion window to the cellar. The central
part is an early C17 remodelling; tall gable with moulded verge and carved
finials to kneelers and saddlestone, 3-light edge-hollow-chamfer mullion
window with drip to attic; moulded window surround with cornice to 1st
floor now with a pair of glazing-bar sashes; wide segmental moulded stone
archway with impost strings and high plinth, inner orders appear to have
been cut down. The right hand part has jettied 1st floor gable with
exposed timber-framing and a (C20 restored) bargeboard with quatrefoil
decoration; 3 C18 glazing-bar sash windows on 1st floor, 2 (mid-C19) on
ground floor and a half-glazed door to left. High cobbled alleyway; high
pointed probably c.1300 archway to left (blocked), Tudor archway to right
in front of a similar c.1300 archway (partly cut away for stairs etc).
Rear picturesque with irregular wings (q.v. No 1-11 consec. Old George
Yard), and 2 gables and a lean-to with irregular windows, the central one
with a wooden cross-mullion window. Interior: rear room of North wing on
ground floor has a fireplace with quatrefoil decoration and a splat-
baluster ventilated cupboard door.
