TQ 3080 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER WHITEHALL SW1
(east side)
83/42 No 3.
GV II
Offices and shop. c.1890-1900 (possibly with 1910-20 alteration of window bays).
Portland stone and polished granite on what may be early steel frame; slate roof.
Ornate, vaguely French Renaissance, tripartite, superimposed order composition of
narrow frontage. 4 storeys, attic storey and dormered pavilion roof. 3 windows
wide. Ground floor has modern shop front but retains tripartite articulation of
Doric columns carrying entablature. The window bays are run through vertically
from 1st to 3rd floors, with bronzed casements and metal apron panels (may be
original or alteration of 1910-20); the openings are finished off above 3rd floor
pilaster jambs with blind archivolt arches carved with shell fans, the centre one
with keystone. Three-quarter giant Ionic columns articulate 1st and 2nd floors
with dosserets over capitals carrying the 3rd floor Corinthian order. Deep,
enriched crowning entablature with balustraded parapet and ornate Baroque vases,
in front of attic storey with secondary cornice surmounted by central pedimented
elaborated stone dormer.
