West gateway and attached garden
wall and balustrade to Redland Court

Piers, gates, wall and balustrade. c1735, incorporating
remains of C16 walling. Gates by Nathaniel Arthur. Limestone
ashlar piers and wrought-iron gates; brick and limestone
rubble wall with ashlar balustrades. Piers with small urn
finials, and fine double gates with overthrow arch containing
a cartouche. Rubble wall extends S and joins C16 brick wall
which extends along the terrace in front of Redland Court
(qv), with a balustrade and steps up to the courtyard from the
garden. Historical note: The wall survives from the
Elizabethan house formerly on the site. Arthur made the gates
to Redland Chapel (qv).
