New Malton Cemetery Chapel and

Cemetery chapel and Chapel of Rest. c1860. Rockfaced sandstone
with ashlar quoins and dressings, on chamfered plinth; steeply
pitched slate roofs with coped gables. 1-bay gable wall of
chapel of rest to west; 1-storey 3-bay chapel to east; linked
by 2-bay cross-gabled porch and vestibule range, arranged
1/2:1:1/2.
Porch has 2-centred arch of 3 chamfered orders, the inner on
foliate shafted corbels, the outer continuous; blind
quatrefoil moulding in gable apex, and wrought-iron finial on
moulded trefoil base at each end of crossgable. In centre of
crossgable, gabled bellcote on chamfered plinth, with
trefoiled opening beneath pointed hoodmould on foliate stops,
and blind trefoil moulding in apex. Wrought-iron gable finial
on roll-moulded base, and ballflower corbel table at base of
gable coping. On each side of porch, single cinquefoiled
lancet to flanking vestibules.
Chapel of Rest entered from east, through vestibule within
porch, with board double doors on wrought-iron hinges in
2-centred arched opening. Windows flanking vestibule are
cinquefoiled lancets. West side has 3 similar lights,
separated by dwarf buttresses with offsets. Diagonal
buttressed north and south gable walls have windows of 3
trefoiled lights beneath foiled circle tracery, and pointed
hoodmoulds on foliate stops; chamfered sillband. Moulded
fleur-de-lys gable finials at each end.
Chapel entered at west end, through vestibule within porch.
Details largely repeat those of Chapel of Rest, with
trefoil-headed windows, and east window of cinquefoiled lights
with 6-pointed star in the head. Wheel gable crosses. All
openings are quoined and chamfered, and windows have diamond
lattice glazing throughout.
