School 1931-2 by Oswald P Milne for Dartington Hall, Whitewash rendered
brick. Delabole slate hipped roofs with low moulded parapets. Rendered
axial stacks with cornices and low clay pots.
Plan: Quadrangular plan with main entrance tower, dining hall and offices
in front (N) range, school houses in long side ranges with class rooms at
corners and assembly hall and flanking library and studio linked by open-
air rooms and loggia at south end of the quadrangle. Neo-Georgian style.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. North front 6:7:6 bays, centre set back
with central tower with low diminishing top stages; clock face and doorway
with ashlar architrave; 12-pane sashes, ground floor centre tall 15-pane
sashes and those above with blind arches. Rear elevation of front range
1:1:5:1:1 windows with 2-storey canted bays to left and right. Long side
ranges 1:2:10:2:1, end 2 bays break forward. Assembly hall at S end has 4
round clerestory windows and central clock on first floor and open loggia
below with rectangular piers. Long ranges of sash windows on outer
elevations.
Interior: Assembly hall has stage, concealed ceiling lights and oak
plywood lined walls. Dining hall has galleried corridor. Staircases with
solid balustrades and moulded handrails. Integral furniture in children'
rooms, library and classrooms and open-air rooms under loggia at south end.
Note: Dartington was a progressive, liberal co-educational school.
Foxhole was built as its junior school but was first used for senior
children.
