The Unicorn Hotel

Public house. Earlier C19, altered. Sandstone ashlar facade
with watershot coursed sandstone sides and rear, slate roof.
L-plan formed by rectagular main block with long rear wing to
left. Jacobean style. Two storeys over basements, a
symmetrical 3-window facade with a central gable, central
doorway in C17 style with hoodmould, canted bay windows at
ground floor, cross-windows at 1st floor with 4-pane glazing
in each light and double-hung sashes in one side only. Roof
with large front gable and projecting verges, all with apex
finials; axial chimneys on ridge each side of centre. Left
side wall has blocked doorway at ground floor, and sashed
window above this with joinery in cross-window form; wing
continued to rear has doorway to basement, 2 smilar windows at
ground floor and 3 above (plus a small inserted window at
ground floor). Right-hand side wall has modern brick addition
at ground floor (toilets). Rear: wing includes open-fronted
double cart-house with central iron column, and former stable
at rear end, with manger (linked to remains of former shippon
forming rear end of cobbled yard). INTERIOR: ground floor
mostly altered but includes small lobby with large iron hooks
in ceiling; large vaulted basements throughout, with stone
keeping table, and butcher's rails suspended from ceiling;
original batten doors with strap hinges, including external
door to yard, with ventilation grill. History: associated with
former cattle market held on adjoining site in earlier C19.
