Methodist chapel, now mosque. 1862, by Poulton and Woodman of
Reading. Orange brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone
dressings and slate roof. Aisled rectangular plan at
right-angles to road, with semi-circular portico at west end.
Simplified Italianate style. Tall centre with storeyed aisles,
1:4:1 windows; stone plinth, ground floor sill-band and band
linking 1st-floor windows, moulded frieze and cornice,
pedimented centre with acroteria. The centre has a
semicircular portico of giant round-headed arches with
keystones carried on square columns with composite capitals, a
4-band frieze and deep dentilled cornice with antifixae; under
the portico, coupled doorways and tall windows; and above the
portico 3 low windows forming an arcade breaking into the
pediment, with a keyed oculus above. The flanking bays each
have a narrow round-headed arch containing a window on each
floor, the upper round-headed and the upper half in a stone
arch with imposts and keystone, rising from the band. The
6-bay side walls have similar windows coupled in pairs with
giant stone mullions. All the windows have margin panes and
circular glazing bars.
INTERIOR: horseshoe gallery on slender octagonal cast-iron
columns, with upper aisle arcade of round-headed arches;
round-headed arch at east end, with organ; tiered rostrum with
bowed reading desk flanked by curved stairs; original pews.
