Terrace of six dwellings, now in use as offices. c1825. By James
Gillespie Graham. Ashlar-faced with Welsh slate roof with
axial stacks. Three storeys with basement and attic. 18-window
range arranged 3-12-3 with the outer bays marked by full
height pilasters over first and second storeys, and with an
additional attic storey over the cornice. Each unit has
round-arched windows to rusticated ground floor, Doric
pilasters to doorcases of the outer bays, Doric porches in the
central range. Upper windows are 12-pane sashes with moulded
architraves in the central range. Attic lit by dormer windows
in central range. Moulded cornice and blocking course over.
Return elevation to Mortimer Street of three bays with doorway to
right in Doric porch. Cast-iron spear head railings to
basement area, and cast-iron sphinx-like foot scrapers.
Flanking wall and gate piers adjoin to the north-east. Staircases
and other contemporary features survive in several of the
houses. This terrace comprises part of the Hamilton Square
development, an important example of formal planning
instigated by John Laird in 1825.
