House. c1840. Probably by Charles Reed. Stucco with Welsh
slate roof with ridge cresting. Tudor gothic style. 2 storeys,
symmetrically designed entrance front of 3 gabled bays with
central entrance. Advanced central gable with octagonal angle
turrets and door recessed in 4-centred archway with stilted
arched window over. Right-hand bay has mullioned windows on
each floor with latticed lights. Left-hand gable has
projecting canted bay window to ground floor and 2-light
traceried arched window above. Return elevation to north has
late C19 polygonal conservatory added to canted bay window to
ground floor of left-hand gable with stilted arched wood
mullioned and transomed window over, the gable stressed by
string course. Right-hand bay has 4-light mullioned window to
ground floor and traceried casement above in gabled dormer
with moulded kneelers. The house is one of the earliest
buildings in the development of Claughton, laid out by Reed
for Sir William Jackson in the early 1840's.
