Terraced house. c.1753 by William Timbrell and John Phillips, altered
late C18 or early C19. Brown brick, slate roof; stuccoed rear. 3
storeys plus 2 attic storeys added early to mid C19, on basement. 3
windows wide. Entrance to right with panelled door and fanlight in stone
doorcase with cornice on consoles. Recessed glazing bar sashes under
flat gauged arches. Moulded stone cornice over 2nd floor and parapet
with coping. 1st floor c.1800 cast iron balcony. Cast iron area railings.
Rear stuccoed with canted bay to ground and 1st floors. Interior retains
ground floor front room with good mid C18 panelling, moulded cornice
doorcases and alcove and cupboard flanking chimneypiece; 1st floor rooms
retain cornices but later neo-Georgian decoration; probably early C19
stone staircase with plain iron balustrade. The roof has an early
iron frame structure. No 22 was the residence of the Duke of Clarence
before his accession as William IV.
