House. Probably C16 with early C20 alterations and extensions. Timber-
framing and limestone rubble with tile roofs. Irregular plan. Two storeys.
East front has two projecting gabled cross-wings and a recessed centre.
The windows are timber casements with leaded glazing. The left-hand wing
is of one bay and is close-studded with middle rails to each floor. The
gable is similarly studded and has a tie-beam and collar. The recessed
centre is close-studded and has a wide window on both floors. To each side
on the first floor are small windows. At the right is a doorway. The right-
hand cross-wing is of stone except for the front of the upper storey, where
close-studded framing is exposed. The gable has a king-strut and fish-bone
bracing. At the right is a gabled C20 extension. Chimneys to left and right
and at rear. Interior: not accessible at time of survey. A room on the south
side of the house is said to contain a wide fireplace with flat four-centred
stone fireplace and a C17 panelled wood chimneypiece with inlaid patterns in
the panels. The house was the boyhood home of James Lees-Milne and is mentioned
in his autobiography. (VCH, p 428).
