Description

SK 80 SE MANTON PRIORY ROAD (East side)

4/68
The Priory
14.6.54

GV II

House, incorporating remains of former priory, but now externally largely
of C19, though possibly based on restoration of earlier features. Coursed
rubble with dressings, slate roof. Entrance front of 1 storey with attics.
Projecting gable to left contains a 3-light plain chamfered mullion window
in cellar, and a C19 4-light king mullioned window above with hoodmould and
decorated lintel. In the gable an ornately traceried flat headed light,
with tudor roses in the spandrels, and two flanking medieval fragments. To
the right, a single bay with 3-light mullioned window, possibly C17, and in
the angle a projecting flat roofed porch with 4 centred C19 arch to outer
door. To the rear, a wing projects: the south face is C19, stuccoed, 2
storeys, and 3 bays with sash windows in ornately moulded architraves. To
the north, the wing is much older, and contains a 3-light stone mullioned
window to each floor.

A small length of castellated wall links the house to the north with 'the
cottage'. The wall is pierced by a shallow segmental arch.
