Description

SP 0937 BROADWAY CP HIGH STREET (north side)
8/43 Hunter's Lodge
GV II
Restaurant, formerly house. C17 with possible earlier remains and late C19
additions and alterations. Squared limestone with remains of timber-frame
and stone slate roof. Irregular plan. Two storeys. South front has parapet
and two projecting gabled bays which have C19 rebated and chamfered cross
windows. The right-hand part of the front wall between bays is stepped back
and has a single-storey porch under a hipped roof. Chimneys against inside of
right-hand wall and to left of left-hand gabled bay. At the rear is a parallel
range which appears to be mainly C19. On the east side, recessed between the
gables of the two ranges is a C19 stone doorway. The rear wall of the front
range, adjoining this doorway, is of exposed close-studded timber-framing.
Peg holes in the principal post suggest that this timber wall once extended
further to the east. The parallel front wall of the rear range, adjoining the
other side of the doorway, is also close-studded but is of re-used timber and
is not consistently pegged: it may be C19. Interior: right-hand (east) room
of front range has spine beam and common joists which are chamfered and stopped.
The wide stone fireplace is cyma-moulded and has a cornice mantel.
