RISHANGLES EYE ROAD
TM 16 NE
4/47 Common Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. C16, in 2 builds, with early C19 wing to north. Timber framed and
roughcast-rendered under a pantiled roof. C19 work in red brick, also
pantiled. 2 storeys and attic. C19 casement windows and plank door.
Internal stack. Lean-to addition on front gable end. Early C19 wing has 2
first floor small-paned casement windows under cambered arches. C20 metal
casements to ground floor. Boarded door. Unmodernised interior with many of
the timbers concealed. The section to the east (rear) of the stack contains
an open truss with flat tie beam supporting substantial queen-posts, with one-
way braces to the arcade plates. There is evidence for tie beam braces which
passed through the present floor level. This structure continues to the rear
as a barn: this barn is now much altered and not of special interest. The 2
bays at the front of the house (one containing the inserted stack) have
reverse-curved braces in the side walls and straight tension braces in the
gable end. First floor structure has heavy joists and a bridging beam which
was arched-braced to the wallposts (one brace missing). Queen-post roof.
Newel stair beside stack. The unusual build of this house suggests it is a
later conversion of service accommodation and part of the barn.
