GV II
Farmhouse. Probably C17, remodelled in the late C18 and enlarged and altered in the
mid-to late C19. Addition of c.1900 at rear. Rendered over coursed stone rubble.
Gable-ended scantle-slate roof. Gabled roof over C19 rear wing. Rendered lateral
stacks.
Plan and development: 3-room and cross-passage plan (facing south) probably C17 but
possibly earlier, consisting of central hall with external lateral stack to rear,
probable former cross-passage to right (east) and former service room beyond to right
with external end stack, and former upper room to left (west) with integral lateral
stack to rear. C19 kitchen and further service room to left and C19 1-room addition
at rear of hall with probably early C20 additions beyond that. C18 or C19 lean-to
outshut in angle of rear wing and upper room. Eaves raised, probably in the C18 or
C19. 2-storeys.
Exterior: C17 range to right of 4 asymmetrically-spaced bays. C19 4-pane boxed
sashes in outer bays; second bay from left with ground-floor late C18 6-pane boxed
glazing bar sash and first-floor late C18 Gothick window with C19 boxed 4-pane sash,
C18 intersecting tracery in arched head and gable above with probably C19 shaped
barge boards; first-floor C19 small panelled 1-light wooden casement in second bay
from right. C20 half-glazed door in second bay from right. Kitchen wing to left
with C19 4-pane sash in each floor to right, first-floor C20 wooden cross window to
left and ground floor C19 small paned 1-light wooden casement to left; central mid
C19 door with 6 side-beaded flush panels (top 2 panels glazed), beaded pegged frame
and probably mid-to late C19 gabled porch to shaped barge boards. Lower service
range to left with boarded loft door to left, ground-floor C19 wooden cross window to
left and C19 boarded door to right.
Interior: Mainly mid-to late C19 fixtures and fittings. C19 staircase, probably
inserted in former cross-passage, with octagonal foot newels and moulded handrails.
C19 fireplace in right-hand ground floor room with flanking C19 arched recesses and
cupboards. Left-hand ground-floor room (probably former kitchen) of C17 range with
cased cross beam, blocked large fireplace with C19 keyed wooden overmantel, and C19
matchboarded dado. C19 4-panelled doors throughout. Only the space between the
early roof and the higher later roof inspected. The probably C17 roof was
inaccesible at time of survey.
