House. Late C17 or early C18, extended at both ends in C18/C19.
Thatched rear extension 1979. Long, low, single storey,
timberframed plastered, facing N, with half-hipped thatched roof.
Slightly higher middle part is oldest. Eyebrow dormer over front
door, with 3-light late C17 mullioned leaded window and iron
casement, shows this part was of one and a half storeys. It had
an external gable chimney on W end, now adapted to serve an C18,
single storey W extension with 2 windows in each side. Similar,
lower E extension probably C19. Low 3-light and 4-light C19
casements in rear wall. Plank front door. Deeds in HRO describe
it as erected on a newly-enclosed holding beside road probably
c.1700 and long owned by Abraham Wood, bricklayer and limeburner
(d 1813) who had his limekiln on land at rear. Opposite the
house is an old chalk pit. An historic documented house
illustrating the beginning of permanent house-building at that
level of society. Part of group with school and buildings at The
Ash.
