House. C16/C17 origin. W part extended in C17. E part greatly
extended and remodelled in early C18. SW rear wing and uniform
refronting in later C19. Plasterwork in Pink Room said to be of
1920s. Oval plaster panel on front has '1500 1726'. 2 storeys
and attics, 4 windows, timberframed and plastered house facing N.
Steep old red tile parallel roofs, with double gable to E and
rear catslide extension of main gable at W. 2 gabled dormers
high in front roof. 3 large gables with windows, at rear. Front
cased in painted brickwork below projecting upper floor with
panelled pargetting, coved eaves and black painted borders. C18
and C19 2-light flush casement windows. Recessed C19 casements
on Ground floor. Panelled entrance door off-centre with small
tiled hood. Spacious entrance hall occupies E end of older front
range. Remains of former floor of black and white marble in
closet. 2 Tuscan columns screen fine early C18 well stair at
rear rising as far as attics. Swept moulded handrail, cut and
decorated string, 3 balusters to each tread in form of Tuscan
columns with dies. Uncut string in attic flights. Elaborate NE
drawing room with higher ceiling in C18 E extension. Heavy,
modillioned cornice, moulded dado and skirting, carved wooden
chimneypiece with eared surround, projecting corbels with paterae
and fretted frieze. Pierced dentils to cornice. 6-panel door
with moulded architrave. Sash windows with 6/6 panes, in
projecting E bay. Early C18 2-panelled doors with HL hinges on
both floors and edge moulded stile plank doors with strap hinges
in the attics. Single-framed collar rafter roof in NW part.
Clasped purlin roofs elsewhere. Separate steep winding stair in
shallow 2 storeys lean-to SW extension. Prominent at the E
entrance to the village.
