House, and attached railings. c1775, altered C19. Built for
John Rawlinson. Sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings and
chamfered quoins. Slate roof with gable stacks to left and
right. 2 storeys with an attic and a basement.
5 bays under an eaves cornice with a balustrade, plus a 3-bay
centre crowned by a pediment containing a Diocletian window
with a moulded architrave. All the other windows have moulded
architraves and sashes with glazing bars, 4 panes on the
ground floor and 12 panes on the first floor. The doorway has
engaged Tuscan columns and an open pediment containing a
semi-elliptical fanlight with intersecting Gothick glazing
bars. The original door, up 2 steps with nosings, has raised
and fielded panels, those below the lock rail being arranged
in a diamond pattern. The areas to both sides have cast-iron
railings with urn finials on the standards.
INTERIOR: dogleg open-string staircase with carved brackets,
stick balusters, and ramped handrail. The entrance hall
archway is elliptical with fluted pilasters, and scrolled
decoration in the spandrels. The first-floor archway has
trefoil pilasters.
