timber framed, slate roof. Now no chimney stack. 2 storeys. T-shaped
plan formed by 2 periods of building, present crosswing on the right,
including much timber framing,is probably earlier than present main
range, which has a 2-bay baffle-entry plan; central door with large
stone lintel lettered "IA 1635" now enclosed by recent single-storey
gabled porch; two 3-light casements on each floor. Gable of projecting
wing has timber frame exposed and two 3-light casements.
Interior: wing of 2 bays, but said to have been originally only one
(that on front end), contains main elements of timber cross wall
including wall posts, each on plinth of 2 sandstone blocks, tie beam
with knee braces, one of 2 original intermediate posts, a high rail and a
doorway with grill of short staves over it. There are two bridging beams
with quarter-round moulding, and 2 others which are adzed oak copies of
originals. Originally very large chimney stack with back-to-back
fireplaces, now only that in left bay remains, with large bressummer;
bread oven found in chimney breast; and chimney stack was found to have
cavity filled with oat grains. Roof trusses mostly concealed, but in
wing the lower ends of windbraces, and tops of wall framing with braces,
are visible.
