Terrace of town houses. 1768-74 by Robert Adam. Brown brick with stucco
dressings, slate roofs. Originally a symmetrical composition with No. 7
forming pedimented centrepiece closing vista down John Adam Street, but
houses beyond No. 6 demolished. 3 storeys, attic storey and basement.
3 window wide fronts. No. 7 has banded rustication to ground floor and
enriched door surround to right with dentil cornice. Recessed glazing bar
sashes, under flat gauged arches, articulated through 1st and 2nd floors by
giant honeysuckle enriched pilasters supporting a decorated frieze, cornice
and attic storey with pediment containing Adam coat of arms. Nos. 8 to 10
similar but plainer with enriched doorways to left and right, recessed
glazing bar sashes; string courses to 1st floor and over 2nd floor; No. 10
projects with bowed south flank. No. 6 essentially the same but with C.19
stuccoing to ground floor and to 1st floor architraves. Original, bowed
anthemion pattern iron balconettes mostly intact in particular on No. 8,
C.19 balconettes to No. 6. Cast iron area railings. Interiors retain most
of original features, plasterwork, geometric staircases, some chimneypieces
etc.
