A much-improved view of the 1842 overbridge compared with more than a decade ago, when the track was badly overgrown and the structure was in a poor state of repair. In recent times, Latherbrush Bridge has marked the boundary between the National Rail's Northern Line between Bishop Auckland and Darlington and the Weardale Railway Trust's Heritage Line. Taken on the morning of Saturday, May 25, 2019, the three main arches of the bridge are now visible, together with the new pedestrian walkway situated on the eastern parapet. The bridge is slightly skewed and the road bend has to be negotiated with extreme care! In the right foreground is the passing loop to the temporary platform for occasional special excursions to Weardale. For a brief period, the main track carried coal freight trains from open-cast sites in west Durham to thermal power stations in South Yorkshire, but the rusted state of the rails indicate that little traffic currently uses this section of the Permanent Way, west of Bishop Auckland station.
