Formerly commercial offices, now hotel. c.1900-10, in 2
builds. Entrance block of red brick and Portland stone, rear
range of sandstone ashlar, with slate roof. On island site
between Corporation Street and railway, the rear range
rectangular with the entrance block forming a quadrant at the
south end. Entrance block in neo-Baroque style: 3 storeys with
basement and double attic, 9 bays in a convex quarter circle,
symmetrical, the end bays projected slightly; with channelled
rusticated ashlar ground floor, banded pilasters and open
pediments with cartouches to the end bays, fluted giant
pilasters between these (coupled in the centre), dentilled and
modillioned cornice surmounted by a balustraded parapet, large
scrolled inverted consoles to the attic storey behind this, a
mansard roof with flat-roofed dormers and an octagonal turret
with domed copper roof rising through the centre. The ground
floor has a central round-headed doorway with banded
pilasters, cartouche keystone with swags, and a segmental open
pediment; round-headed windows to the end bays and rectangular
windows in the intermediate bays, all these with elaborate
keystones. The upper floors have casements with moulded
architraves, those at 1st floor with pediments, except the end
bays which have curved 3-light windows with colonnettes and
dentilled cornices at 1st floor and large round-headed windows
above. All windows above ground floor have glazing bars. Rear
range differs: 8 bays divided by piers, basement and 4 storeys
divided horizontally 2:2:1 by prominent cornices (the upper
modillioned), the piers of the lower stage channelled, and
3-light sashed windows on all floors; parapet with tubular
railings. Interior not inspected.
