Office building. 1911, by F.E.L.Harris; altered and raised.
Matt glazed faience (light blue to basement and ground floor,
cream above); roof concealed. Rectangular plan on corner site,
with chamfered corner to Redfern Street. Neo-Baroque style.
Three storeys and basement, plus added attic; 4 bays to
Hanover Street and 6 bays to Redfern Street; channelled
rustication to most of Hanover Street facade but only to
ground floor and basement of 1st bay and Redfern Street
facade, which have giant fluted Ionic pilasters to the upper
floors; cornice to ground floor, frieze and prominent
modillioned cornice over top floor; wide semicircular entrance
arch to 3rd bay, with projected scrolled keyblock and run-out
voussoirs, triple windows on each floor above this, those at
1st floor with triple keystones and those at 2nd floor with
pedimented centre. Gibbs surrounds to flanking windows at 1st
floor, moulded architraves to those at 2nd floor. First bay,
corner, and 6-bay facade to Redfern Street have round-headed
windows to ground floor with cavetto surrounds and triple
keyblocks, open pedimented architraves to 1st floor, moulded
architraves and aprons to 2nd floor. Ground floor of corner
has large lettered plaque (beginning "Erected 1911 / The
Co-operative Union Limited ..."). Cast iron area balustrades.
