Portland House
GV II
Residential care home for the elderly, formerly a private
house. Early to mid C19.
MATERIALS: rendered, solid walls. Slated mansard roof, the
upper front slope with asbestos slates; low building to right
has slated pitched roof. Rendered chimney on right gable with
5 good, round red pots, the front 2 taller than the rest; low
building has red brick chimney to right with 2 round cream
pots.
PLAN: double-fronted, double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with garret; single-storey range to right.
3-window front, the middle window in a deep gabled projection.
This contains the front doorway with moulded architrave and
panelled reveals; late C20 wooden glazed door. In front of it
is a single-storeyed, glazed wooden porch on a rendered base,
probably late C19; glazed, pitched roof with gable at the
front.
Round-arched second storey window above, set in a shallow
round-arched recess; barred sashes, the lower one with 3 panes
and margin panes, the upper with 6 panes, margin panes and
shaped panes in the window head. Round-arched gable window
with 2-paned sashes. Plain bargeboards, probably a C20
replacement. Flanking windows have 6-paned sashes. Many of the
windows (certainly all 3 second-storey windows) contain old
glass. 2 plain dormer windows, probably C20 additions.
Single-storey range to right has no features; added porch with
late C20 panelled door has built-in fanlight.
INTERIOR not inspected. Allen T Hussell (Ilfracombe Chronicle,
2.7.1937), said it had a 'splendid example of an open
continuous handrail staircase, with cut and bracketed shallow
strings'. He also mentions good moulded plaster cornices
decorated with little balls.
(Ilfracombe Chronicle: Hussell AT: 8).
